Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players will gain the option to challenge certain calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
